Actor for Life: How to Have an
Amazing Career Without all the Drama.
Choose your life, or let other people
choose it for you. It’s that simple.
Living from a place of choice requires
practice, just like learning to play an
instrument or becoming fluent in a foreign
language. Actually, you are learning a new
vocabulary, that of knowing your own mind
and consciously choosing your thoughts and
actions.
These basic skills are useful in every
context and relationship. When you take
time to develop and practice them, you find
that life is smoother, easier, and more
fulfilling.
Several related competencies develop as
you actively choose your life. Some of them
are:
— how to say no and draw boundaries,
— how to recognize that it is time to
change a habit or challenge an outdated
belief,
— how to create your own practices and
develop traditions that promote both
internal and interpersonal harmony,
— how to invest time and thought in
your decision making process, and
— how to muster the courage to be an
advocate for yourself, one who believes you
deserve a fulfilling and joyful life.
Through a series of mental exercises, we
expand our self-awareness, and most
participants find that they redefine the
image of who they are and who they want to
be in the future.
Do you have to work at choosing? Yes.
especially in the beginning. (Over time it
becomes habitual.) But even though it
initially requires effort, living your life at
choice is worth the time and energy you
invest in becoming proficient at it.
In this course, choosing starts the minute
you walk in the door. You will not be
greeted by a fixed curriculum, one size fits
all. This is not a workshop for passive
learners; it is not about the accumulation of
information. It is about developing insight
into your own patterns of thought and
behavior, and how you can use that
knowledge to make choices in your life.
Our flexible structure is something like a
Chinese menu. There are 34 exercise
options, and participants choose three to
four exercises from each of three categories,
The Self, The Work and The Whole. You
inquire into the topics that are most relevant
to your life right now.
After solo thinking time for pre-work,
participants coach in pairs or groups of
three using the client’s chosen topic and
format. In this way, our coaching practice
reflects a real world coaching relationship in
which each meeting focuses on the client’s
agenda. In the role of coach, a progression of core competencies will be held as a focus
to refine core skills.
